Bob Odenkirk's Unlikely Action Hero in 'Nobody' Is Getting a Sequel

When we last saw Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk, "Better Call Saul"), he was returning to a stable life after Russian mobsters briefly upended his suburban retirement fantasy. That was in 2021, when "Nobody" was first released. The Hollywood Reporter says a sequel is in the works, on track for a 2025 release with Timo Tjahjanto ("The Night Comes for Us") set to direct.

"Nobody" was a relative box-office smash, coming at the tail end of the global COVID-19 pandemic, a time when theaters were challenged like never before. Some reviewers even said Odenkirk's action thriller might spawn the first pandemic-era action franchise. Made for just $16 million, "Nobody" took home $57 million globally and still maintains an "84% Fresh" critics score and "94% Fresh" audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Odenkirk's Hutch Mansell is, on the surface, a mild-mannered office worker employed by his father-in-law (Michael Ironside, "Starship Troopers"). His wife, Becca (Connie Nielsen, "Gladiator"), is successful, but he's estranged from his family while his children and in-laws think of him as a failure -- but Becca knows he's not everything he appears to be. In reality, he's a retired "auditor," a kind of assassin used by secretive U.S. government intelligence agencies.

After a home invasion upsets the delicate balance of his home and family life, he goes looking for a chance to dip his toe back into his former life while earning his family's respect once again. He gets more than he bargained for after fighting a group of Russian mobsters who track him down at home -- so Hutch goes on the offensive. He seeks out the mob boss (Aleksei Serebryakov, "Leviathan") to try to end it peacefully. When that fails, he ends it another way.

After "Nobody" was released, Odenkirk, better known for his comedic performances on "Breaking Bad" and "Mr. Show with Bob and David" as well as his dramatic turn as Jimmy McGill on "Better Call Saul," was praised for his chops as an action hero. He had the everyman look but could break arms and faces on a "John Wick" level.

"I thought, ‘What am I adding to this genre? I'm not adding any handsomeness. What can I add?’ Well, I can add a sense of humaneness," Odenkirk told Variety in 2021. "I would like to play a guy who feels each punch and suffers his way through the fight and doesn't do it on autopilot."

The result wasn't just memorable, it was awe-inspiring and left audiences wanting more. In that way, it's surprising that a sequel has taken so long to come to fruition. But the wait is almost over. Odenkirk, and "Nobody" writer Derek Kolstad ("John Wick"), along with Aaron Rabin ("Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan") and Umair Aleem ("Kate") have a script and are set to begin production in fall 2024.

Though it has yet to start filming, "Nobody 2" also has a release date: Aug. 15, 2025.
