'Top Gun: Maverick' Star Joins Arnold Schwarzenegger in Netflix Spy Series

The real espionage professionals keep telling us that the best spies blend into their surroundings and never draw attention to themselves. Hollywood has never gotten the message and producers have cast the still-magnetic Arnold Schwarzenegger in a new global spy adventure series for Netflix.

Of course, Arnold has tried to play the unassuming spy before in the 1994 James Cameron movie "True Lies." Schwarzenegger was a Marine Corps veteran trying to pass himself off as a computer salesman while secretly keeping the world safe for democracy as an agent for the U.S. government's Omega Sector task force.

The series doesn't have a title yet, but he's joined by Monica Barbaro, who was set to make a big 2020 splash as call sign Phoenix in "Top Gun: Maverick." "TGM," a/k/a "Top Gun: The Lost Sequel," has been bumped twice and is now slated for a July 2021 release.

Barbaro will play Schwarzenegger's daughter, so we're betting on some family banter about how being a spy made the old man an absent father and a daughter who's got better ass-kicking skills than her dad. (Note: This is not a SPOILER but a highly educated guess.)

Skydance Television will produce. They've got a history with Arnold as producers of "Terminator: Genisys" and "Terminator: Dark Fate." Series creator Nick Santora worked on Skydance's upcoming "Jack Reacher" series for Amazon Prime and the company is behind the excellent "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" series, renewed for a third season by Amazon.

There's no word on a release date, just a reveal that writers are still working on the scripts. Schwarzenegger has never starred in a television series before, so this will be a big deal when Netflix is finally ready to bring the show to the streaming service. Let's cross our fingers for a fall 2021 release.
