There are stories in the military and veteran community that never make the evening news. Stories that live in the silence between homecomings and deployments. Stories about resilience, leadership, sacrifice, and rebuilding. Stories that matter not because they’re loud, but because they’re real. Military.com’s Military & Veteran Journalism Fund was created to make sure those stories get told.
The Mission Behind the Fund
Journalism has always been a force multiplier for truth. But the truth about military life, which includes the complexity of transition, the quiet toll of service, and the innovation that veterans bring to every sector, is often underreported.
That’s why Military.com launched the Fund. It is designed to empower new voices with the resources and backing to dig deeper, investigate harder, and shine light where others haven’t looked.
This isn’t a contest for clicks or commentary. It’s an invitation for impact. Each grant, worth up to $10,000, supports an original project that uncovers something previously unseen. This could be a problem that needs fixing, a story that deserves recognition, or a lesson that can help the next generation of service members and veterans.

Why It Matters Right Now
We’re living in a time when the stories of those who serve are often drowned out by headlines that barely scratch the surface. Veterans are innovators, small-business owners, caregivers, students, and leaders shaping every corner of American life. Yet, much of the media still frames military experience through a narrow lens of combat or crisis. The Journalism Fund exists to intentionally broaden that view. It exists to remind the nation that military service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.
We are looking for the kind of journalism that changes policies, sparks empathy, or simply helps a reader understand what it really means to serve.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re not just seeking professional journalists with years of newsroom experience, although those individuals are certainly welcome. We want veterans with a story to tell. Military spouses with a unique perspective. Students studying journalism or communications. Advocates with the courage to ask tough questions.
If you’ve ever thought, “Someone should write about this,” the Fund was designed for you. You don’t need to have press credentials. You need curiosity, integrity, and a story worth telling.

What a Funded Story Looks Like
Think of the projects this way: they’re the kinds of stories that start conversations and demand attention. Maybe it’s uncovering how military families are adapting to the digital battlefield of social media and misinformation. Maybe it’s a look at how veteran entrepreneurs are redefining post-service success. Or even an investigative deep-dive into gaps in mental health care, transition programs, or Guard deployments.
Each selected project receives direct support from Military.com editors and a national platform for publication. Your story won’t just live online. Instead, it will reach a community of millions who care deeply about what happens to those who serve.
How to Step Forward
The process is simple:
- Pitch your idea.
- Outline what you’ll investigate, why it matters, and what it could change.
- Submit your proposal by Veterans Day, November 11, 2025.
Military.com will review all submissions and select the strongest ten proposals. Each of these will be backed with up to $10,000 in funding to bring your vision to life.
The Call to Serve
Journalism, at its best, is another form of service through holding institutions accountable, honoring sacrifice, and giving voice to those who can’t speak for themselves. The Military.com Military & Veteran Journalism Fund gives you the platform to do that, with support, guidance, and reach that few outlets can match. So if you’ve ever thought about writing that story, the one you wish someone had told when you were in, this is your moment.
