The United Service Organizations Inc. (USO) has announced plans to temporarily close all USO Airport Centers in the U.S. by Friday, March 13, as a precaution against exposure to the novel coronavirus, formally known as COVID-19.
The organization announced that it is following Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidance and made its decision after consultation with military, airport and civil authorities. However, USO airport locations will still be made available for large military personnel movements as required.
There are more than 30,000 USO volunteers, and many of those individuals fall into the senior citizen age group, said to be most threatened by the virus.
"We remain committed to responsibly supporting our service members and their families across the U.S. and overseas. Our leadership teams will monitor health advisories and evaluate operational conditions on a frequent basis as long as necessary to ensure continuity of mission delivery and the safety of our staff and volunteers," said USO Chief Operating Officer Alan Reyes.
