Gamers itching for something new to play have plenty of options for cheap or free games, but it appears many are overlooking their local library. While it may come as a surprise to some, libraries often have robust selections of video games— and not just family-friendly ones. It's possible to find everything from new releases to classic hits in most catalogs, so it's worth taking a look for those eyeballing a new release that they aren't quite sure about.
With services like Game Pass and PS Plus, it's typically easy to find something new to play. However, libraries have a distinct advantage here. Gamers can request specific titles be added to their library's selection, with a decent chance of those requests being approved — and typically in a relatively timely manner.
Local Libraries Have the Games
Over on Reddit, VaughnFry shared an image of their local library's video game selection, picking up Bayonetta for themselves. An up-close shot of the rack shows just how deep the library goes, though. There are plenty of new, triple-A games available, from modern sports titles like FC26 to first-party Nintendo games like Metroid Prime 4. Gamers who enjoy physical media but don't necessarily want to outright purchase games can save thousands of dollars by taking advantage of their library's selections.
Other users shared their own experiences using their libraries, though some users did report that their libraries didn't have any games on offer. Some users also worry about people abusing the video game checkout system, concerned that the games are too easy to steal. But even if that risk exists, it shouldn't stop anyone hoping to try new games from exploring what the library has to offer.
For those worried about a limited selection, libraries tend to have much more than just the Nintendo titles VaughnFry showed off. A quick perusal of the Jackson County Library System revealed dozens of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X games on offer. Some libraries even offer a "Library of Things," and while a console is probably a stretch, it doesn't hurt to check for accessories like additional controllers.
