Gearbox has responded after some players reported more performance issues following the recent Borderlands 4 update. The September 25 Borderlands 4 patch notes boasted various performance improvements, although some have found the opposite to be true so far.

It was immediately clear at launch that Borderlands 4 was suffering from severe performance problems. While players across all platforms have reported these issues, they appear to be particularly prevalent on PC. Even users on powerful rigs have consistently reported FPS and stuttering problems, and it has immediately been a focus for Gearbox throughout the game's early patches. However, it's not quite there yet.

Gearbox Advises Borderlands 4 Players With Performance Issues to Stick With It For 15 Minutes

Following the September 25 Borderlands 4 update, some PC players have reported that the low FPS and stuttering issues have actually gotten worse, a direct contradiction to the patch notes. Gearbox is already aware, issuing a statement on X that suggests players simply play through it. "Stuttering issues should resolve over time as the shaders continue to compile in the background while playing," the post said, claiming that players "still experiencing issues after 15 minutes of continuous play" should clear their shader cache via their video card manufacturer's approved method.

The post was met with a mixed response from fans, with some responding with their own negative experiences following the patch. If players follow the entire process provided by Gearbox, it's still not clear how much more effective the patch would be. However, it's understandably frustrating for players to feel as though their gameplay is getting worse without having to take further steps outside the game. There have already been instances of Borderlands 4 modders taking performance problems into their own hands, but not even the talented community has managed to get to the bottom of what is happening with the game right now.

While the initial Borderlands 4 reviews were solid (picking up a Top Critic Average of 83 on review aggregator site OpenCritic), the game has struggled for good press from fans due to the prominent performance issues. The fact that Gearbox was forced to delay Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 hasn't helped matters, either. Hopefully, the developer can resolve the game's performance issues in good time, allowing players to fully enjoy the latest Borderlands game.
