MoH Recipients Carter and Romesha's Stories Come to Screen in 'The Outpost'

"The Outpost," a feature film based on the true story of the Afghanistan War's Battle of Kamdesh, was scheduled to have its world premiere last month at the canceled SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas.

That didn't happen, but it's now scheduled for a theatrical release in July, pending the reopening of movie theaters nationwide.

The Battle of Kamdesh took place in 2009 at Combat Outpost Keating when a small unit of U.S. troops fended off a coordinated attack from Taliban fighters. Army Staff Sgts. Clinton Romesha and Ty Carter were later awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions during the battle.

The movie is based on "The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor," CNN anchor Jake Tapper's best-selling non-fiction book about the battle. The screenplay was written by the Oscar-nominated team of Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy ("The Fighter," "Patriots Day," "Finest Hours").

Director Rod Lurie ("The Contender," "The Last Castle") is himself an Army veteran, having served as an air defense artillery officer after graduating from West Point in 1984. He says about the film, "I wish upon every director a movie so suited to their emotional needs. It was an honor and a duty to tell the story of my brothers in arms. I can think of no modern story that so beautifully displays the spirit of the American soldier. What we are willing to die for tells us so much more about ourselves than what we are willing to kill for. You'll understand what I mean after you see the film."

Scott Eastwood stars as Romesha, and Caleb Landry Jones portrays Carter. Orlando Bloom and Jacob Scipio co-star in the film.

The real Ty Carter makes an appearance in the movie, alongside other soldiers who fought at the Battle of Kamdesh. Bulgaria stood in for Afghanistan during filming.

The studio has released a behind-the-scenes video about the making of the movie.

Tapper visited the set during production and is excited about the results. "I couldn't be prouder to bring to even wider audiences the story of the selflessness and sacrifice, the courage and determination, of the troops who served at COP Keating," said the CNN anchor. "Rod, the producers and the actors did an incredible job re-creating the outpost and the battle and, perhaps most importantly, the essential truths of the experience and the heroes there."
