Members of the National Guard may receive Tuition Assistance (TA), though not all elements of the Guard receive equal benefits.

The Army and Air Force determine separately how to administer their Guard members' federal TA. Many states also offer their National Guard members state-funded education incentives based on state guidelines and eligibility. Such benefits might include state TA, waivers, exemptions, student loan repayment, etc.

Army National Guard

The Army National Guard (ARNG) Federal Tuition Assistance program provides financial assistance to drilling Guard members. A master's degree may be supported provided funding is available. The maximum amount paid in federal tuition assistance for ARNG members is:

  • 100% of tuition up to $250 per semester hour, up to 16 semester hours annually
  • Not to exceed $4,000 per fiscal year
  • Lifetime limit of 130 undergraduate semester hours
  • Lifetime limit of 39 graduate semester hours
  • Lifetime limit of 21 certificate/diploma semester hours
  • May be used with the Post-9/11 GI Bill or MGIB-Active Duty for the same course

Eligibility

  • The college/university is regionally or nationally accredited and is a GoArmyEd participant.
  • The course meets a requirement in your documented degree plan from the school.
  • For undergraduate degrees, recipients must maintain a grade-point average (GPA) of 2.0.
  • For graduate degrees, recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0.

Air National Guard

If activated, members of the Air National Guard (ANG) become eligible for Air Force TA.

State Tuition Assistance

Although not all states offer payment of TA, many offer other tuition incentives in varying amounts. Visit our listing of state veterans benefits to find out yours.
