Share

On April 7, 2003, the Syrian Volunteers engaged in a fierce fight with Americans who were on the opposite side of the Tigris River. Shaafout was wounded by American fire and a fellow fighter from Syria was killed nearby. Shaafout's men fled to Syria as Baghdad fell.
