Three people have died and more than a dozen injured after a Taliban attack on the US consulate in Herat in western Afghanistan. Militants exploded a powerful truck bomb outside the front gates on Friday morning, then began firing at security guards. A police officer, a translator and a security guard are understood to have been killed as well as five of the attackers. The US said all its personnel were safe. The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying it was intended to show the Americans that they are not safe anywhere in this country.
