    Director William Wellman’s World War I action picture won the first-ever Oscar for Best Picture. It’s from the end of the silent era, so it might be challenging for some viewers. Wellman had combat pilot experience that he put to amazing use on this big-budget production ($2 million was a lot of money for that era). The attraction here is how Wellman invented movie aviation battle scenes and how few movies since have equaled their excitement. (1927)
