The nation's largest Veterans Day event, the New York City Veterans Day Parade hosted by the United War Veterans Council, will return on Monday, November 11, 2024, for its 105th year.
The Marine Corps is this year's featured service for the event, which will march up Fifth Avenue between 25th and 45th streets in Manhattan from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.. It will be broadcast live on WABC in New York, as well as live-streamed here on Military.com.
The parade is expected to feature nearly 300 marching and vehicle units and welcome 20,000 participants from across America, representing every service branch of the military and every era.
This year’s grand marshal will be retired Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer, the first Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient for Operation Enduring Freedom. He was honored for his actions during the Battle of Ganjgal in Afghanistan in 2009.
“At the time, Meyer was a 21-year-old corporal, helping train and mentor Afghan Army troops,” the United War Veterans Council said in a statement announcing Meyer as grand marshal. “When he received word that heavily-armed Taliban fighters had pinned down a force of Afghan and U.S. troops, Meyer defied orders and drove into the ‘killing zone’ to help.”
The parade may be viewed live online here on November 11.
In person, spectators can get a view anywhere along Fifth Avenue from the step-off point, 25th Street, to its end on 45th Street.
Every year, New York City's Veterans Day commemoration honors all eras of service and all service branches.
Ahead of this year’s parade, there will also be an Honor Ruck for veterans and active military from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, November 10, 2024. This fitness march begins at Eternal Light Flagstaff at Madison Square Park, includes visits to memorials in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and ends at the World Trade Center Reflecting Pools.
On Monday, November 11, immediately before the parade at 10:55 a.m., there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at Madison Square Park.
