Khalid, the 21-year-old R&B singer, has made quite an impression on the charts so far, but did you know he was a military kid?
He gets his widest exposure yet on Saturday, when he appears as the musical guest on a new episode of "Saturday Night Live" hosted by Idris Elba.
Khalid Robinson was born at Fort Stewart, Georgia, in February 1998. While his mom Linda Wolfe served in the Army, the family lived at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Fort Drum, New York; and spent six years in Heidelberg, Germany. His mom was a supply technician and sang in the Army chorus.
The family settled in El Paso, Texas, when Khalid was a junior in high school and his mom was stationed at Fort Bliss. He started uploading his songs to SoundCloud and attracted the attention of an RCA representative. Kylie Jenner posted a Snapchat video of herself and her friends listening to his debut single "Location," and his career blew up.
His first album "American Teen" debuted in the Top 10, and Khalid looks set for a long career. Look for him to perform his new single "My Bad" on SNL.
