Since you may be restricted in the amount of effects you ship, nontemporary storage (NTS) is authorized for the balance of house hold goods (HHG). The NTS will be stored in government-owned storage facilities, commercial, or privately owned facilities obtained by the government. Your servicing Transportation Office will determine which facility will be used.
If you placed items in NTS at government expense, you must provide a copy of one of the following forms to your servicing specialist:
- Service Order for Personal Property, DD Form 1164 (PDF)
- Application for Shipment and/or storage of Personnel Property, DD Form 1299 (PDF)
It's imperative that you provide these forms because it's the only way your housing referral office (HRO) will know that you elected to store items at government expense. Failure to provide the NTS documents may result in the storage being converted from government expense to your personal expense.
Prior to the end of each fiscal year, your HRO will provide a fund site to the servicing Transportation Office as payment for storage for the next fiscal year. Provided you meet the NTS eligibility requirements, this process continues for the duration of your overseas assignment.
