'68 Whiskey' Aims to Mix Drama and Comedy at an Afghanistan War Base

Who's ready for a satirical take on Army medics stationed in Afghanistan? Producer Brian Grazer and Ron Howard have decided that's just what America needs with their upcoming series "68 Whiskey," set to debut on the Paramount Network on January 15, 2020.

The show promises both "intense drama" and "irreverent humor," the same combo that made "M*A*S*H" the movie such a hit. It's what the Hollywood folks like to call a "dramedy." Check out the first trailer below.

The medics call their base "The Orphanage." The producers have decided to go with a cast of mostly newcomers that features Sam Keeley, Jeremy Tardy, Gage Golightly, Cristina Rodlo, Beth Riesgraf, Lamont Thompson, Nicholas Coombe and Derek Theler.

Both Grazer and Howard are pushing the show in a first look video called "Inside 68 Whiskey" that you can watch below.

The pair makes some big promises in their press release: "The series is cinematic, adrenaline-fueled and filled with wit and irreverence to cut the tension of the life and death stakes of war for U.S. medics in present day Afghanistan. It's unlike anything we've done before -- and anything else on TV."

Paramount Network is also the home to "Yellowstone," the epic western drama starring Kevin Costner, so the odds are good that the show will be allowed to be more intense than the usual basic cable show. We'll check back in January and see how things are going.
