The Montgomery GI Bill pays a set benefit amount based on a veteran's "training time," such as the number of college classes a veteran takes or a veteran's accumulated time in an on-the-job training program.
For undergraduate classes, the training time is determined as follows:
- 0-2 credit hours: 1/4 time
- 3-5 hours: less than 1/2 time
- 6-8 hours: 1/2 time
- 9-11 hours: 3/4 time
- 12 hours and above: full time
For graduate training, the Department of Veterans Affairs will pay your benefits based on what the school reports your training time to be. So, if you take three graduate hours and the school tells the VA you're considered a full-time student, that is how the VA will pay you.
The following basic monthly rates are effective Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2026. For trainees on active duty, payment is limited to the reimbursement of tuition and fees for the training taken.
Note: The Department of Veterans Affairs will phase out the Montgomery GI Bill beginning in 2030.
