Tricare has announced that premium rates for the Continued Health Care Benefit Program (CHCBP) will increase about 3% in 2021.

The CHCBP quarterly premiums will see an increase from $1,553 to $1,599 for individuals and $3,500 to $3,605 for family coverage. This increase is effective Oct. 1, 2020 for fiscal year 2021.

CHCBP coverage must be purchased in 90-day increments and premiums are billed quarterly.

CHCBP is a temporary health insurance program designed to help veterans continue to receive health care coverage after they leave the military and until they get permanent coverage from other means. The coverage is available to most veterans for a maximum of 36 months after leaving the service.

Details about CHCBP coverage.

CHCBP is not a Tricare program, but it offers coverage comparable to Tricare Select group-B with similar benefits, providers and program rules. Prescriptions are also covered under the plan.

There are other transitional health care programs available to veterans and their dependents. Eligibility for these programs is limited to certain categories of veterans. In almost all cases, the veteran must have a separation that is under "other than adverse conditions, this means they must have an "honorable" or "general" discharge to qualify.
